A root cause and prevention approach to reducing the risk of recurrence
Surviving cancer is extraordinary. It takes physical endurance, emotional resilience, and a level of courage that most people will never fully understand. And when treatment ends and the medical team sends you home, it can feel equal parts relief and uncertainty.
Because the question that lives quietly in the mind of almost every survivor is the same one. What do I do now to make sure it does not come back? It is the right question. And the answer is far more actionable than most survivors are ever told.
The conventional medical system is exceptional at treating cancer. It is significantly less equipped to address the biological terrain that allowed cancer to develop in the first place. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery target the tumour. They do not address the chronic inflammation, immune dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, gut disruption, and cellular stress that created the environment in which cancer could take hold.
That is the root cause conversation. And it is the one that can genuinely change outcomes.

Understanding Recurrence at the Root
Cancer does not recur randomly. Recurrence happens when residual cancer cells, which may remain in the body after treatment, find a biological environment permissive enough to reactivate and grow. That environment is shaped by the same factors that contributed to the original cancer: inflammation, immune suppression, hormonal dysregulation, oxidative stress, and a microbiome that is unable to perform its protective functions.This means that the period following cancer treatment is not a passive waiting game. It is one of the most important windows of opportunity to fundamentally shift your internal biology.
The Pillars of Root Cause Cancer Prevention
1. Reducing Chronic Inflammation: Chronic, low grade inflammation is one of the most well established drivers of cancer initiation, progression, and recurrence. It creates a cellular environment that promotes abnormal cell growth, suppresses immune surveillance, and accelerates tumor-promoting signalling pathways.The primary drivers of chronic inflammation are dietary: ultra-processed foods, refined sugars, industrial seed oils, excess alcohol, and low fibre intake are among the most significant. An anti-inflammatory dietary foundation built around whole foods, colourful vegetables, quality protein, healthy fats including omega-3 fatty acids, and an abundance of fibre is one of the most evidence-informed interventions available to cancer survivors.
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been extensively studied for its anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Sulforaphane from cruciferous vegetables, quercetin from onions and apples, and resveratrol from berries and grapes are among the phytonutrients with the most compelling research behind them in the context of cancer prevention.
2. Optimizing Immune Function: The immune system is the body's primary cancer surveillance mechanism. Natural killer cells and cytotoxic T cells are constantly patrolling for abnormal cell behavior. When immune function is compromised, that surveillance fails.Cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy and radiation, places significant stress on immune competence. Rebuilding immune function after treatment is not optional for survivors. It is foundational.
Key immune-supporting strategies include adequate sleep, targeted nutritional support including zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, selenium, and beta-glucans, stress reduction, regular moderate exercise, and gut microbiome restoration. Each of these has direct mechanistic evidence supporting its role in immune surveillance and cancer prevention.
Vitamin D deserves particular attention. Research consistently demonstrates an inverse relationship between Vitamin D status and cancer risk and recurrence across multiple cancer types. Many cancer survivors are deficient, and optimizing levels through sunlight, dietary sources, and supplementation is one of the most accessible and evidence-supported interventions available.
3. Gut Health and the Microbiome: The gut microbiome has emerged as one of the most significant factors in cancer biology over the past decade. The microbiome regulates immune function, modulates inflammation, influences oestrogen metabolism, produces short-chain fatty acids that protect against cancer cell proliferation, and directly affects the efficacy of immunotherapy treatments.Cancer treatment devastates the microbiome. Antibiotics, chemotherapy, and radiation all cause significant disruption to the gut ecosystem, impairing the very biological systems that protect against recurrence.
Rebuilding the microbiome through a high fibre, plant-rich diet, fermented foods, targeted probiotic supplementation, and the elimination of microbiome-disrupting habits such as excessive alcohol and ultra-processed food consumption is a critical and underutilized component of post-cancer care.
4. Blood Sugar Regulation and Insulin: The relationship between insulin, blood sugar, and cancer is one of the most clinically important and least discussed in survivor care. Cancer cells are metabolically distinct from normal cells. They rely heavily on glucose for fuel, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. Chronically elevated blood sugar and insulin create a biological environment that actively supports cancer cell survival and proliferation.
Insulin is also a potent growth factor. Elevated insulin levels stimulate the IGF-1 pathway, which promotes cell division and suppresses programmed cell death, two processes that are directly relevant to cancer recurrence.
A dietary and lifestyle approach that prioritizes blood sugar stability, minimizes refined carbohydrates and sugars, incorporates regular physical activity, and supports healthy body composition is not simply good general health advice. For cancer survivors, it is a specific and evidence-based recurrence prevention strategy.
5. Hormonal Balance: For hormone-sensitive cancers, including the majority of breast cancers, certain gynecological cancers, and prostate cancer, hormonal balance is a central pillar of recurrence prevention.
Oestrogen dominance, driven by excess body fat, chronic stress, environmental toxin exposure, poor gut microbiome health, and certain dietary patterns, creates conditions that can promote recurrence in oestrogen-sensitive cancers. The oestrobolome, the collection of gut bacteria responsible for oestrogen metabolism, plays a critical role in determining how oestrogen is processed and eliminated from the body.
Supporting healthy oestrogen metabolism through cruciferous vegetables, ground flaxseed, a robust microbiome, adequate fibre, and reduced environmental toxin exposure is a targeted and evidence-informed strategy for survivors of hormone-sensitive cancers.
6. Stress and the Nervous System: Chronic psychological stress has a direct and measurable impact on cancer biology. It elevates cortisol, which suppresses immune function and promotes inflammatory signaling. It disrupts sleep, which is one of the primary windows during which the immune system performs its surveillance and repair functions. And it activates biological pathways that research has linked to cancer cell survival and metastasis.
This is not about blaming stress for cancer. It is about recognizing that the nervous system is a biological system with direct consequences for immune function and cellular health. Chronic stress is not an inevitable condition to be endured. It is a physiological state that can be investigated, addressed, and meaningfully improved.
Breath-work, movement, time in nature, therapeutic support, sleep optimization, and community connection all have measurable effects on cortisol regulation and immune competence. For cancer survivors, these are not soft recommendations. They are clinical priorities.
7. Reducing Toxic Burden: Environmental toxins including pesticides, heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, personal care products, and household cleaners, and airborne pollutants have well-documented relationships with cancer initiation and promotion. Many are carcinogenic, many are hormonal disruptors, and most are avoidable or reducible with informed choices.
Supporting the body's detoxification systems through adequate hydration, fibre intake, liver-supportive nutrients including sulforaphane, N-acetyl cysteine, and B vitamins, regular sweating through exercise or sauna, and reducing direct exposure to known toxins is a meaningful component of a comprehensive recurrence prevention protocol.
8. Sleep as a Non-Negotiable: Sleep is when the body repairs, the immune system consolidates its surveillance activity, inflammation resolves, and cellular stress is processed. Consistently poor sleep is associated with increased cancer risk and impaired recovery outcomes.
Seven to nine hours of consolidated sleep, consistent sleep and wake times, a dark and cool sleeping environment, and addressing the underlying drivers of poor sleep including cortisol dysregulation, blood sugar instability, and gut discomfort are all directly relevant to the biology of cancer prevention.
Testing, Not Guessing: One of the most important shifts a cancer survivor can make is moving from generalized wellness advice to personalized, data-driven insight. Blood work that assesses inflammatory markers including CRP and homocysteine, Vitamin D levels, fasting insulin and glucose, hormonal panels, thyroid function, and nutrient status gives a precise picture of where the biological vulnerabilities lie.
